(KFYI News) – Officials of the Scottsdale-based Fiesta Bowl are scrambling to line up not one, but two bowl game sponsors for the coming season.
Just weeks after Tostitos pulled out as sponsor of the Fiesta Bowl under pressure from ESPN which now controls the naming rights for the BCS Championship games, Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW) announced this week that it's not renewing its sponsorship of the bowl game played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe during the last week of December.
BWW had sponsored the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl for two years. Prior to that, it was known as the Insight Bowl.
Mike Jurecki, afternoon talk show host on KFYI brother station Fox Sports 910, says there's still time for both bowl games to line up sponsors for the coming season, but time is tight.
While it's up to ESPN to find a sponsor for the Fiesta Bowl, the Tempe game is owned by the Fiesta Bowl, so it will be up to a recently-slimmed-down Fiesta Bowl staff to sell the naming rights for the Tempe game, which is legally known as the Valley of the Sun Bowl.
Jurecki says one or both of the bowl games could conceivably pull up stakes if they don't find a corporate sponsor. "I think the Fiesta Bowl is fine because they play at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale," Jurecki says. "As for Sun Devil Stadium, they're undergoing some renovation right now. The future of that bowl game is probably up in the air, but I don't think it's gonna happen overnight."
