(Washington, DC) -- More than 800,000 federal workers are being furloughed due to a partial government shutdown, while senators and members of the House of Representatives are still getting paid.

That's because the lawmakers make a constitutionally protected $174,000 dollars per year. President Obama earlier today thanked federal employees for their work as he decried a, quote, "political climate that, too often in recent years, has treated you like a punching bag."

A partial shutdown of the federal government kicked in this morning after lawmakers failed to reach a deal to extend funding beyond the end of the 2013 fiscal year.
