(Washington, DC)  --  The Labor Department says the American economy added 217,000 non-farm jobs in May.

The unemployment rate remained steady at 6.3 percent.  The number of unemployed people remained steady at nine-point-eight million.  Employment increased in professional and business services, health care, food services and transportation.

The 217,000 job increase was slightly below expectations, though many had expected the unemployment rate to increase slightly.
