PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say officers shot and killed a 55-year-old man who fired a rifle at officers, neighbors' houses and a police helicopter.

According to police, officers responding late Monday night to a report of shots fired in a neighborhood in the vicinity of 15th Avenue and Bethany Home Road were greeted by gunfire.

Those officers took cover and numerous others then began arriving as backup as the gunman fired at a police helicopter and nearby homes.

Officer James Holmes says two officers who got on the roof of a house across the street shot the gunman as he was standing on a porch.

He says no officers or anybody else was injured.

The man's identity hasn't been released.
