Congress Calls On Trump To Denounce Hate Groups

posted by Hector Gonzales -

Congress is calling on President Donald Trump to denounce hate groups.  Lawmakers on Capitol Hill Tuesday passed a resolution that calls on the President to "unequivocally condemn the shameful and hate-filled" acts of violence carried out by the KKK, white nationalists, white supremacists and Neo-Nazis at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia last month.  The resolution calls on Trump to also condemn what it calls the growing prevalence of extremists who support anti-Semitism, xenophobia and white supremacy.  It also urges Attorney General Jeff Sessions to investigate acts of violence and intimidation by white nationalists, neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan and similar groups.  Tuesday's joint resolution passed with bipartisan support and will go to Trump for his signature.  An anti-racist demonstrator was killed at the rally in Charlottesville when a suspected white nationalist drove his car into a group of protesters.

The joint resolution calls the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer a domestic terrorist attack.  Trump has been sharply criticized for blaming "many sides" for the violence in Charlottesville.
