A critic of President Trump complained that his tweets have broken “democratic customs.” The critic alleges that his willingness to challenge the status quo – decorum—and whatever else they suddenly value -- has “undermined democratic values, damage public trust in the press and potentially compromised the independence of institutions like the FBI.”
But lo and behold – even that critic acknowledges that is now it’s not just Trump who’s “violating norms!” That is quite a concession from the Left.
Julie Azari, a writer with the website 538, blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for taking the “unusual step of rescinding Trump’s invitation to deliver the State of the Union address until the government was reopened.’
Azari blames Trump for forcing Pelosi to “have to decide between adhering to norms and standing up for democratic values.” That is laughable – dishonest – and utterly absurd, but why is the State of the Union so important to our Republic? It is just a speech – and usually a self-serving one at that.
According to Wikipedia, the State of the Union address is:
The address fulfills the requirement in Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution for the President to periodically "give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."
But it is so much more than that. It is a tradition – one more tradition the Left would cheapen, eradicate, distort out of existence if they could. Just like they worked feverishly to eradicate due process during the Kavanaugh hearings.
It isn’t just the legal rights and requirements they attack – just look at the attack they launched on our nation’s tradition of believing that kids are less culpable than adults – that adults like Nathan Phillips should prey on kids like Nick Sandmann. The idea that adults should be held to a higher standard came under attack by the social justice warriors.
In other words – no tradition – no traditional value – is safe or sacred to the Left. And the Left – as perfectly embodied in Speaker Pelosi is unafraid to take anyone and everyone on because they have a complicit press ready to hold Trump responsible for their actions. After all, how can you blame Nancy when she is up against such an ogre? Poor Nancy, what’s a woman to do?
In his first Sate of the Union address, President Trump delivered some great messages:
- “This in fact is our new American moment. There has never been a better time to start living the American Dream. If you work hard, if you believe in yourself, if you believe in America, then you can dream anything, you can be anything, and together, we can achieve anything."
- “My duty, and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber, is to defend Americans, to protect their safety, their families, their communities, and their right to the American Dream. Because Americans are dreamers, too.”
- “Tonight, I am calling on Congress to finally close the deadly loopholes that have allowed MS-13, and other criminal gangs, to break into our country.”
- “Let’s begin tonight by recognizing that the State of our Union is strong because our people are strong. And together we are building a safe, strong and proud America. Since the election, we have created 2.4 million new jobs, including ... 200,000 new jobs in manufacturing alone.”
Yeah, Nancy really couldn’t risk having the president deliver this speech again, so she postponed it. No problem. Check out my State Of The Union Address!
