U.S. Sailor Kills 2 People And Self in Pearl Harbor Shooting

US-SHOOTING-UNREST-PEARLHARBOR

Military officials say a U.S. sailor shot and killed two civilian Defense Department employees and wounded a third person before taking his own life at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii Wednesday afternoon.

The gunman was identified as an active duty sailor who was assigned to a submarine, Rear Admiral Robert Chadwick said at a news conference about the incident.

"We have no indication yet whether they were targeted or if it was a random shooting," Chadwick said, adding he did not know what type of weapon was used and that personal weapons were not allowed on the base.

Personnel were alerted to the shooting at around 2:30 p.m. Hawaii time when the base went into lockdown, with the PA telling people to "shelter-in-place" while the scene was secured. The lockdown was lifted at around 4 p.m.

Witnesses told Hawaii News Now the shooting occurred at Drydock 2 at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Navy Region Hawaii.

“I kind of recognize that as gunshots,” the witness said. “I looked out in time to see the shooter ... shoot himself."

The third person wounded in the shooting is in stable, but guarded condition, The Queen's Health System said.

"Obviously our thoughts are with the families of the victims and everyone involved,” Chadwick said.

Base security and the Navy's investigative services will investigate the incident. A motive for the shooting has not been released by authorities.

The shipyard, located across the harbor from the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, repairs, maintains and modernizes the fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor and serves as the home for the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

On Saturday, the 78th anniversary of the 1941 attack by Japan that prompted the U.S. to enter World War II, will be marked. More than 2,400 members of the military and civilians died in the attack.
