Tent City has been around for over 20 years, but that's about to change. On Tuesday, Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone announced during a news conference that the controversial jail will be shut down.
“Starting today, the circus ends and the tents come down,” Penzone said.
Penzone said closing Tent City, established by former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, would save taxpayers $4.5 million.
Chris Merrill spoke with Sheriff Penzone about his decision and we've posted the interview below.
A KFYI listener named Ramona called into The Chris Merrill Show to weigh in on the closure of Tent City.
