White House strategist Steve Bannon has been removed from the National Security Council in a shakeup on Wednesday, according to a report from Bloomberg. Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert’s role was also downgraded in the reorganization.
In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Bannon said, "Susan Rice operationalized the NSC during the last administration. I was put on to ensure that it was de-operationalized. General McMaster has returned the NSC to its proper function."
As a political strategist, the decision to include Bannon on the council drew early criticism for the Trump administration from members of Congress and the military.
According to a filing at the National Archives and Records, National Security Adviser McMaster has been given the duties of organizing the National Security Council and Homeland Security Council in the coming days.
