In 2016 Dr. Kelli Ward ran against Sen. John McCain for his senate seat. Sen. McCain won by 11% in the primary and went on win the primary.

Dr. Kelli Ward is now running against Sen. Jeff Flake for his seat which is up for grabs in 2018. Ward went on WOWO AM in Indiana and was a asked about Sen. John McCain’s current health issues after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Ward said “the likelihood that John McCain is going to come back to the Senate and be at full force for the people of our state and the people of the United States is low."

Keli Ward was then asked if she would think her name would be in the running to replace Sen. McCain if he were to step aside she said she would hope because “ I have a proven track record of years in the state Senate of being extremely effective and of listening to the voice of the people that I represent.”

During her campaign against McCain in 2016 Ward made headlines when she said U.S. Sen. John McCain "old" and "weak".
