The Teacher Walkout Could be Over May 2nd.

The Arizona Educators Assosciation and the Arizona Educators United held a joint press conference yesterday to inform the public that the teacher’s strike will end on Thursday May 3rd 2018 as long as a budget is passed.

Joe Thomas (AEA), Noah Karvelis (AEU), and Rebecca Garelli (AEU) spoke to the public saying that the budget that the legislature will eventually passes is a win for the teachers, but it doesn’t go far enough. Karvelis told the media that “The win isn’t there until we restore the 1.1 billion dollars that have been cut” but that they moved the Governor on teacher’s raises “further than anyone could have imagined.”

Rebecca Garelli says their “greatest victory is the powerful movement they have created” which they will “continue to use on behalf of the students.” The plan is to keep the pressure on the Governor and on the legislature.

The Arizona Legislature is expected to pass a budget that will include a 20% raise for teachers over the next 3 years and an extra $371 million dollars in education funding over the next 5 years.
