Phoenix City leaders could learn a very valuable lesson from the City of South Bend. Mayor Pete Buttigieg decided that the way to win the Democratic nomination for President is to say that there is institutional racism in the police department. The fallout is that veteran cops are predicting a mass exodus because morale is so low. The Mayor of Phoenix is following in the footsteps of Mayor Pete. A recent video showing a Phoenix police officer aggressively arresting a family started a media firestorm before all of the details were in. The Mayor called a community meeting to allow anti police activists to vent. there was nothing productive accomplished, just yelling and screaming about how evil the cops are. One attendee said that they should "shut this city down." Later that week the Mayor allowed activists to take over a City Council meeting calling for the defunding of the police department. Phoenix Police is in the midst of a recruiting drive. But it's the veteran cops who are the most frustrated. Officers with 20 plus years on the job feel abandoned by city leaders. Unless Mayor Gallego and other Democrats on the City Council learn from the mistakes of South Bend they are going to witness the same mass exodus here.
As a community, we need to speak up and let officers know that the silent majority is silent no more. We need to let the City Council and officers know that the vast majority of citizens honor and respect their service and sacrifice.
