The first known fatality from a driverless Uber has happened in Tempe when police say a woman was struck and killed by a self-driving Uber on Mill Avenue.
Uber has paused its self-driving operations in the Valley as a result.
Tempe police say the woman was crossing Mill Avenue, outside of a crosswalk, near Curry Road when she was hit by a self-driving Uber.
Police say the car was in autonomous mode at the time, but there was a driver behind the wheel.
Uber is assisting with the investigation.
