Forgetting Why We Remember Memorial Day

Americans know that Memorial Day is about respecting our nation’s war dead. However, over the years the holiday has morphed into a day devoted to flat screen TV sales, BBQ, half-marathons and baseball. But where did Memorial Day begin, who created it, and why?

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. The Civil War had torn our country apart, but the deep respect for the men and women who died in that war was shared by all. That shared value and the history of how Memorial Day came to be cannot be lost.
