Maricopa County is setting aside another $1-million for payouts and expenses related to illegal detentions by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The move is in compliance with a federal judge's order to compensate victims in the lawsuit against former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The case determined MCSO deputies unfairly targeted Latinos during traffic stops.
County supervisors voted 5-0 to approve the $1-million taxpayer-funded account on Wednesday. According to the "The Arizona Republic," county taxpayers have forked over nearly 70-million dollars because of the lawsuit and another 26-million dollars will be needed next year for compliance efforts.
