State Senator Says Phoenix PD Violating State law

(Phoenix, AZ)  A State Senator asks attorney general Mark Brnovich to look into whether Phoenix police are violating provisions of a controversial immigration law. Republican John Kavanagh believes policy changes the department made this summer illegally restrict enforcing part of the state's immigration laws. Phoenix police officers can now only ask about immigration status during criminal investigations.  Kavanagh says that directly contradicts Senate Bill 10-70.  If an investigation concludes Kavanagh is correct, the city has 30 days to come into compliance with the law or face losing a portion of its state shared revenues.  Kavanagh says he has little doubt the attorney general will agree with him.  He has asked for the review under a 2016 law that allows a single lawmaker to request an investigation.
