Tent City Jail Closes

Maricopa County's Tent City Jail is officially closed.  For more than 20 years the infamous outdoor jail drew national attention.  The Arizona Republic reports that the controversial facility quietly closed over the weekend.  That was one of the first orders of business for Sheriff Paul Penzone who defeated former sheriff and Tent City creator Joe Arpaio last November.  Arpaio opened the 7-acre compound in 1993 due to jail overcrowding and inmates donned pink underwear in swealtering temperatures.  This weekend the remaining Tent City inmates were transferred to the county's nearby Durango Jail.
