Arizona Corrections Director Could Face Charges

Arizona Department of Corrections

(Phoenix, AZ)  --  A judge warns that Arizona Corrections Director Charles Ryan could be held in civil contempt of court for not improving healthcare for inmates. The judge and attorneys for prisoners say Arizona prison officials haven't made good on their end of a class action lawsuit settlement three years ago.  The lawsuit alleged that Arizona inmates are not receiving adequate health care.  The judge also threatened to begin fining the state in December if adequate improvements are not made by then.  The Department of Corrections issued a statement saying it's already taken action to encourage its medical provider to meet the performance measures it agreed to when settling the case.
