Glendale Light Rail Plans Have Died

Glendale won't see a light rail anytime soon.  A divided Glendale City Council told staffers Monday not to move forward on a proposed route into downtown.

The seven-mile light-rail route would have opened in 2026 and zigzagged from an existing route on 19th Avenue in Phoenix, past Grand Canyon University and then northwest to 58th Avenue.

Officials say the cost would be about 130-million-dollars per mile and not give the city much revenue in return.  The decision to end future light-rail discussions will go to a formal vote soon.
