BREAKING: DPS Trooper Killed

A DPS Trooper in training has been killed in the line of duty on I-10 near Avondale and two others have been injured after a struggle with a suspect. Here's what we know.

550 KFYI's Mike Broomhead has been in touch with law enforcement this morning.  He says police were called after a suspect was seen running in and out of traffic on I-10 while throwing items at cars heading east bound.

A DPS Trooper arrived on the scene, followed by two more Troopers.  All three DPS Troopers struggled with the suspect. During the struggle, which we're told lasted several minutes, the suspect grabbed one of the officer's guns and took two shots. One was fatal.

Trooper Tyler Edenhofer was killed. He had just graduated from the DPS academy in May and was in his final week of field training.

DPS Trooper Dalin Dorris was shot in the shoulder.  He was taken to a hospital.  DPS Colonel Frank Milstead said considering the circumstances he's in 'good spirits.'

A third Trooper was also injured during the struggle with the suspect.  We don't know the extend of his injuries.

Col. Milstead also said, 'the DPS family is in mourning, our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Lives have been shattered and ruined. And we're all in a little bit of a state of shock this morning.'

The suspect is in custody.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has ordered flags to fly at half-staff to honor Trooper Edenhofer.
