Butterball announced that it is recalling 39 tons of ground turkey which may be contaminated with Salmonella. The United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service confirmed that five people got sick after eating the ground turkey. One of those people required hospitalization.
The prepacked raw ground turkey was produced on July 7, 2018, and has a use- or sell-by date of July 26, 2018. Butterball advised consumers to check any packages they may have frozen.
“Because these products were packaged nine months ago, it is highly unlikely any of the product will be found in retail stores, but it is possible that consumers may have product in their freezers,” Butterball spokesperson Christa Leupen told ABC News.
Salmonella poisoning is one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever and develop 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and in rare instances requires hospitalization.
